let total be x
15 % of x=4725
15×x=4725
x=4725/15
x=315
total=315×100
31500

let the total number of candidates who applied for the examination be x.
so, no. of ineligible applicants is 5x/100
no. of eligible candidates is 95x/100
now, no. of eligible candidates who belonged to the general category = 85% of 95x/100
so, no of candidates who belomged to the other categories = 15% of 95x/100
by the given condition,
15% × 95x/100 = 4275
solving this equation we get, x = 30000
therefore, 30000 candidates applied for the examination.
hope this answer helps you....
