The formula of crystalline CCP solid is A₂BC₂.

In crystalline solid, anions C are arranged in cubic close – packing, cations A occupy 50% of tetrahedral voids & cations B occupy 50% of octahedral voids.

We have to find the formula of solid.

In cubic close-packing structure,

  • Eight atoms present at the corners of the cube and six atoms present at each face centre of cube.
  • Therefore the number of atoms in CCP = 8/8 + 6/3 = 4
  • There are eight tetrahedral and four octahedral voids are present in CCP.

Here, anions C are arranged in CCP , so no of C atoms = 4

Cations A occupy 50% of tetrahedral voids. so no of A atoms = 50% of 8 = 4

Cations B occupy 50% of octahedral voids. so no of B atoms = 50% of 4 = 2

Now, the simple ratio of no of atoms of A , B and C = 4 : 2 : 4 = 2 : 1 : 2

Therefore the formula of solid is A₂BC₂.
