Aluminium (Al) having 3+ as valency as atomic number of aluminum is 13 and we know that outermost shells need 8 electrons to be stable... so electronic configuration of aluminum will be 2,8,3. So, to be stable aluminum will lose 3 electron... and when any element loses the electrons then it will be positively charge. similarly, chlorine having 1- as its atomic number is 17 and it's electronic configuration is 2,8,7 ...so to be stable it needs 1 more electron. and we know that when any elements gain any electron and it will be negatively charge...
when Aluminum combines with chlorine. then it makes formula AlCl3...
