In part a, are event a and b mutually exclusive? Solution we have found p(a)=0.95, p(b)=0.97 and p(ab)= 0.9215 if a and b were mutually exclusive, p (ab) would have to be zero; that is, the probability of the plate meeting both the length and width requirements would be zero. However, this is not the case, since p (ab) =0.9215. So a and b are not mutually exclusive.
