Answer:
The reason for the suffocation is "accumulation of carbon dioxide as well as carbon monoxide".
On combustion, wood and charcoal release gases like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. In addition, oxygen is being consumed in the process of combustion.
So, due to lack of oxygen and increased amount of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide people started feeling suffocating.
Under these conditions, the efficiency of hemoglobin to bind to oxygen decreases whereas the efficiency of binding to carbon dioxide increases. In addition, carbon monoxide is poisonous gas which also reduces the oxygen binding efficiency of hemoglobin.
Thus, people feel suffocating and feel like vomiting.
