In criminal cases the defendant is provided a government lawyer in case the defendant does not have a lawyer or he/she cannot afford one. In a civil case, the defendant has to pay for his /her own lawyer. Or else he/she has to argue for himself/herself. In a civil case there may not be any FIR.
