In the following questions solve the case explain in detail.

  1. Iron metal does not burn in dry air even on strong heating. In moist air iron is slowly oxidised to give rust (iron oxide).
  2. Magnesium has an oxidation number of +2 (in group II, therefore having a lone pair of electrons. Oxygen on the other hand, are missing two electrons to complete its valence orbital (to have eight electrons).

Therefore, both atoms need each other in a 1:1 ratio >> MgO
