It's because ammonia (NH3) has high property of dissolving with water. That's why Ca(OH)2 is used that converts to CaO during reaction and keep the ammonia dries. So that we can extract NH3 gas easily.

In the lab preparation of ammonia, calcium hydroxide is used in excess.

Explanation:

  • Ammonia is a gas that is highly soluble in water. Moreover, as it is a gas its chance of escape is more even if it is collected by a downward displacement reaction.
  • Thus during lab preparation of ammonia, excess amount of calcium hydroxide is used as drying agent.
  • The main purpose of this step is that, as soon as calcium hydroxide is passed over ammonia gas, it gets itself attached to the gas and dries it.
  • Due to this reason, the gas doesn't escape and is later collected and processed.
