He says that he has someth8ng to expiate because he has thrown the clumsy log at the snake which was not at all needed as the snake was already withdrawing itself in the tree hole. Expiate means to make amends. So he tells that he has to make changes in jim and not to harm animals.

In poem snake, the poet says that he has something to expiate bcs, he feel regreted for his deed that he hurted the snake which deserved respect by thowing a log over it. Realizing that it was the voice of education which persuaded him to do so, he thinks of making an alteration in the educational values. Hence it is education that he has to expiate
