yes hydrogen gas is released when bases react with an active metal

Zn +2NaOH -----> Na2ZnO2 + H2

however such reaction is not possible with all metals

hope this will help you

hp780: i fount it on quora
hp780: but in my opinion open does not replace hydrogen because it is less reactive than hydrogen

On reacting an active element with bases hydrogen gas is generally not evolved.

EXCEPTION: Zn + 2NaOH --> Na2ZnO2+ H2

The same reaction happens with aluminium.
