The Sepoys discontented during the Revolt of 1857 because new cartridges were used which were greased with cow or pig fat. Muslims are forbidden from eating pigs and Hindus regarded cows as sacred. So, the sepoys or soldiers refused to use the cartridge which had to be bitten of before it could be loaded into the new rifle ' Enfield rifle ' introduced by the British.
