In the story FACE IN THE DARK.Why Mr. Oliver referred the boy as a miscreant as he wore a school cap and at that time boys of wealthy families had to wear school caps. He was sitting alone in a Rock late at night in the pine forest of Simla and weeping soundlessly. He was shaking convulsively and his face was buried on his hands. The boys were not allowed to go after dark and mr.Oliver thought he broke the rules of the school.

Answer:
A miscreant is a person who has done some mischief. Boys were not supposed to be out after dark. Thus the boy sitting alone on the rock in the night forced the author to call him a miscreant.Mr Oliver saw the boy crying when he was walking to school through the pine forest. The boy's head was downwards and it appeared as if he was holding his face with his hands. Mr Oliver went near the boy and asked him what had got him there. He also wanted to know why the boy was crying.
