In ΔABC

since D and E are mid points of AB and AC respectively.

therefore, DE║ BC     [By Thale's Theorem/Basic proportionality Theorem]

so, ∠ADE =∠ABC    and  ∠AED =∠ACB    [ Corresponding Angles]

              In Δ ADE and ΔABC

                       ∠ADE =∠ABC

                      ∠AED =∠ACB

By AA criteria for similarity of triangles  Δ ADE and ΔABC are similar triangles.

So,        \frac{AD}{AB} =\frac{DE}{BC}

            1/2 = DE/8.4

            DE = 8.4/2 = 4.2 cm
