Sound travels faster in solids , followed by liquids and the gases. The velocity of sound is inversely proportional to the density of the material .i.e. the more the density of the material the less is the velocity of Sound . Since density of wood is less than the density of Water as the wood floats on the surface of the water. Therefore the Sound will travel faster in Water. Moreover Sound cannot travel in Vacuum as it needs a medium for propagation .

Wood. It is because the particles of a solid material are much nearer to each other as compared to Liquids.
