Hi friend,

In XeF₂,total number of valence electrons of Xe=8, two electrons are shared with 2F atoms,6 electrons are left hence 3 lone pairs.

In XeF₄,total number of valence electrons of Xe=8,4 electrons are shared with 4F atoms ,4 electrons are left hence 2 lone pairs.

In XeF₆,total number of valence electrons of Xe=8,6 electrons are shared with 6F atoms ,2 electrons are left hence 1 lone pair.

Question:

In XeF2,XeF4 and XeF6, the number of lone pairs of Xe is???

Solution:

Xe has total of 8 valence electrons.

In XeF2,  2 electrons are shared thereby leaving three lone pair of electrons.

In XeF4,  4 electrons are shared thereby leaving two lone pair of electrons.

In XeF6,  6 electrons are shared thereby leaving one lone pair of electrons.

Hence, No of lone pair of electrons in XeF2, XeF4, XeF6 are 3,2,1 respectively.

Note: Figures showing lone pairs are attached to get a better idea.
