India is situated in the eastern hemisphere. It stands on the northern edge of the Indian ocean . 1)Japan in the north east ,Australia in the south east ,Europe in the north west and Africa in the south west are almost at equal distance from India. 2)The trans Indian ocean routes connecting the countries of Europe in the west and the developing countries of Asia in the east provide a strategic central position to India . 3) Deccan peninsula protrudes into the Indian Ocean. It helps india to establish close contact with west Asia ,Africa and Europe from the western coast and with south east and east Asia from the eastern coast.4) India has the longest coast line on the indian ocean .No other country has such a coastlong line. 5)India has an important position in respect of international sea(trade) routes. International sea routes pass through the Indian ocean .6)Air routes touch Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and kolkata aerodromes. They join them with other famous aerodromes of foreign countries. 7)India' s eminent position in the indian ocean justifies the naming of an ocean after it.
