AFTER INDEPENDECE, THE FARMERS TRANSFORMED SUBSISTENCE AGRICULTURE INTO COMMERCIAL AGRICULTURE. THEY TRIPLED THE PRODUCTION BY ADOPTING VARIOUS MEASURES. THE FRAGMENTATION OF LAND WAS STOPPED THROUGH CHAKBANDI.THE LAND- HOLDING BECAME LARGE AND WERE PLOUGHED ON CO-OPERATIVE BASIS. THE FARMERS NOW BEGAN TO USE NEW TECHNIQUES AND SCIENTIFIC METHODS AND IMPROVED THE HIGH YIELDING VARITIES OF SEED.THE FERTILITY OF THE SOIL WAS MAINTAINED AND INCREASED THROUGH THE USE OF CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS AND IRRIGATION FACILITIES, MULTIPLE CROPPING, INTER-CROPPING, ROTATION OF CROPS ETC. WERE PRACTISED TO ENSURE BETTER CROP YIELDS AND TO MAINTAIN THE FERTILITY OF THE SOIL.
