because the more mass the more the object will resist any change in motion or a tendency to remain in motion. inertia is a tendency .

now for example :- if there is a small stone in a car and a human being and both are traveling with same speed so if the driver suddenly applies brakes then the human will tend to move a bit forward due to inertia but the stone won't even move. because it has less mass than the human body. and a simple explanation that is the more things filled in an object the more mass it will have ans more matter will try to remain in motion. but also there are other factors on which inertia depends such as friction. height from the ground. gravity etc.
