The reaction in which two salts react in aqueous medium and exchange ions to form respective products is called double displacement reaction.
Ex- BaCl2 (aq) + Na2SO4 (aq) react to form
BaSO4 (white ppt.) + NaCl (aq)
We must keep in mind that these reactions take place in aqueous medium. The cations and anions that are present in the salts become free in their aqueous solutions thus allowing the exchange of ions.
The cation of the first salt bonds with the anion of the second salt. Similarly, the anion of the first salt bonds with the cation of the second salt.
In the example above, BaCl2 is the first salt and Na2SO4 is the second salt.
BaCl2:-
Cation--> Ba+2
Anion--> Cl-1
Na2SO4:-
Cation--> Na+1
Anion--> SO4-2
We notice that Ba+2 bonds with SO4-2 to form BASO4 and Na+1 bonds with Cl-1 to form NaCl.
