Introduction -
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is regarded as the greatest leaders of all time. His ideas were adopted by several great people to fight for their own cause. He is called the "Father of Nation" and was given the title "Mahatma" by Rabindranath Tagore. In his honor, we celebrate 2 October as Non-Violence day.
Early life -
Gandhi was born on 2 October,1869 at Porbandar ,Gujarat to Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai. From his childhood, he was taught to be honest, truthful,kind and just. He was married off just at the age of 13 to Kasturba . After completing his matriculation,he traveled to England to study law. In 1891 he returned to India and started working as an advocate in Rajkot and Bombay.
In the year 1892, he had to travel to Natal in order to fight a case in support of Indian Muslim . In South Africa, he found Indians and other black people living in oppressed ,hostile conditions. Due to his color, he was even thrown out of the first class compartment of the train. Moved by the plight of oppressed people he vowed to fight against the oppressors . He formed Natal Indian Congress in the year 1894 and advocated "Satyagraha" for the first time. He requested people to fight against the oppressors through peaceful and non-violent methods. His Satyagraha was a success as the British made many significant changes to ease the life of discriminated communities. With high hopes for freedom of his country he returned to India in the year 1915.

Gandhi started experimenting Satyagraha movement in small movements. Champaran Satyagraha which was the first ever movement by Gandhi in India was a huge success. Following success at Kheda and Ahmedabad ,he felt the need for a nation wide agitation. He was elected as the President of Indian National Congress and made several tours of villages urging people to fight against British by non-violence. His significant movements like Non-Cooperation movement in which he asked people to protest against British made goods.
Salt Satyagraha in which thousands of joined him to protest against taxation of salt .
Civil Disobedience Movement that united people to disobey the laws by the British government.
Quit India Movement that eventually drived away British from the nation and install independence.

Gandhi took Ahimsa and Satya as his weapon to fight against oppressors. He proved it by successful movements that Shanti , Ahimsa and Satya are the most powerful weapon any warrior can use. He requested people to wear home-spun Khadi and was champion of the depressed sections of the society. He warned the nation that until everyone isn't free of poverty ,India isn't independent.
Death and Conclusion -
A heavy curtain of melancholy descended upon the nation when it's loving father was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on 30 January, 1948. Though he departed from the world, his thoughts,ideals and practices are forever imprinted in the minds and hearts of people around the world. He was indeed a "God in disguise"
