The rivers in Southern India are non perennial rivers whereas the rivers in the North are perennial rivers and the south Indian rivers have formed harmful steep waterfalls which has reduce the importance of inland waterways.

River water diversion for irrigation has also lead to the declining importance of inland waterways in South India because there is insufficient depth of water.
