When molecules of a same substance gets oxidised and reduced;
EX: Thermal decomposition of NH4NO2 to N2 and H2O. N is oxidised in NH4+ as its oxidation number changes form -3 to 0. Whereas in NO2- it is reduced from +3 to 0
