Due to the  excess amount of pollutants such a Sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere there is acid rain.

Explanation:

  • The acid rain consists of dissolved sulfuric acid produced when Sulphur dioxide reacts with the water droplets in the rain. This falls down on the  monument resulting in the the destruction of the marble present in the Taj Mahal. Here the  Taj Mahal calcium marble act as the base.
  • There are several other monuments in India the important in the Akshardham temple of Delhi which are facing the same problem.
