The two processes are done in different ways though both the techniques can be used to separate two immiscible liquids.

In case of decantation we separate the supernatant liquid which is less denser than the other liquid by just tilting the beaker and pouring it into another beaker.While in a separating funnel, the more denser liquid which is present at the bottom is removed through a valve into another beaker
