By the phrase “the cold within” the poet means the coldness of the hearts — the lack of warm human spirits of the six persons who gathered around the dying fire in that winter evening. Though all of them possessed a log of wood, none agreed to give it to the fire to keep it burning and keep them warm. This was because of the discriminatory attitude they had against each other over petty things like class, caste, colour, religious faith or ethnicity. In the end, they were found frozen to death with their logs held in their still hands. Therefore the poet commented that the death was not due to the cold outside, it was the cold within their hearts that killed them.

The cold within is a beautiful poem written by James Patrick Kinney. Through this poem the poet expresses coldness of the heart of the people. How people hate each other and how negative feelings towards each other has developed among the people.

The poet has narrated the feelings of six people towards remaining five. Poet has shown different kind of discrimination which is prevalent among the society.

The poet narrated a incident where six men unknowingly captured at one place where without the support of each other they cannot save their lives. But unfortunately because of their prejudice and bias towards each other they didn't help each other or contribute anything from their side to save each others life. As a result they all died because of coldness in their heart. If they would have helped each other they would have saved their lives.

There is prejudice about black and white, rich and poverty, class and creed, caste and religion. Because of this discrimination they all died as they didn't help each other.

This is really a symbolic poem through which poet wants to make us aware that we should not divide ourself as we all are human beings.
