Well, if you use it in this sense as in the given sentence-

I want to be a doctor and

I want to become a doctor.

then  there is not much difference.

ashlee: no not exactly a abbreviation bt be n become can b used in d same sense.

the verb 'become' means changing of one state into another
for ex- He became famous after he acted in the film(it means that he wasnt famous before he acted in the film)
Whereas 'be' means to be in the same state without any change
