Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes. In which 1 pair of chromosome is sex chromosome. Females have a perfect pair of sex chromosome i.e. both are tall (XX). But, males have an imperfect pair of sex chromosome i.e. one of tall and other is short (XY).

Thus, during sexual reprduction, while gamete fusion, the embryo can either be a girl or a boy. Females contribute only X sex chromosome, but male can contribute either X or Y sex chromosome.

Thus, the child which aquires X chromosome from mother and X chromosome from father , will be a girl. Whereas, a child which will aquire X chromosome from mother and Y chromosome from father, will be a boy.

None of the parent is responsible for the sex of their child.

Hence, 'It is a matter of chance that whether a couple will have a male or female child.'
