The IUPAC name for acetic acid is ethanoic acid.

  • The IUPAC naming or IUPAC nomenclature of the organic compounds is one of the most important topics of the whole organic chemistry. It helps us to figure out the name of a complex organic compound by only looking at it's chemical formula.
  • In the acetic acid or in the CH3COOH, there are two carbons which are attached with each other with a single bond. So, we will use the term "Ethan" in it's IUPAC nomenclature. (double bond or triple bond have another names)
  • And,there is a carboxyl group (-COOH) in the chemical formula of the acetic acid, so we have to add an "oic" term in the IUPAC nomenclature.
  • So the final name will be = (Ethan + Oic) Acid = Ethanoic Acid.
