Ivan Ivanich is the central character of ''Gooseberries'', a story by Anton Checkov. Ivan is a cynical man who tries to control his brother's decisions. His younger brother Nicholai dreams of buying a farm & a creek with a gooseberry bush. Ivan is unable to understand his brother's dream & viewpoint. But he's also an upright man & feels sad when his brother mistreats the elderly widow he had married for her money.

Nicholai has a single- minded determination/ obsession with the farm & the gooseberry bush, which he feels is easy to nurture & sweet to eat. His selfishness & arrogant demeanour pains Ivan & he begins to feel disenchanted with the world & wishes that the day would come when the underprivileged would be duly benefitted.
