The infamous Jallianwala Bagh massacre is an unforgettable event in the history of India. It took place on April 13th, 1919 when troops of the British army under Colonel Reginald Dyer constantly fired at the people who came together in Jallianwala Bagh which was a public garden of 6-7 acres and was walled from all the sides, it had five entrances.
In 1919, the Rowlatt Act, 1919 had been implemented, but the civilians were not informed. The civilians came together to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi.
Apart from the celebration, the civilians also came together to peacefully protest the arrest of national leaders, Satya Pal, and Saifuddin Kitchlew.
The heinous event took place on 13th April 1919 many Sikhs gathered in the bagh, and when General Dyre got to know about it, he went there with Sikh, Gurkha, Baluchi, Rajput troops from 2-9th Gurkhas, the 54th Sikhs, and the 59th Sind Rifles.
After entering the Bagh, General Dyre asked his troops to fire at the masses continuously for 10 minutes. He majorly targeted the five entrances so that no one could leave. The incident claimed the life of hundreds of people.
It is estimated that around 379 people died while thousands were injured. This figure was given by General Dyre himself .
By far, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre is considered to be one of the most heinous massacres in history.
