Let the cost of the old painting=x

Therefore CP= x+300

SP=39100

CP + profit%/100=SP

(x+300)+40/300=39100

(x+300)+2/15=39100

(15x+4500+2)/15=39100

15x+4502=39100×15

15x=478500-4502

x=478048/15

x=31599.8667

Answer:

Rs 34200 is paid for the old painting.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the cost of the old painting = x

Therefore C.P =  Rs (x + 300)

Given

SP = Rs 39100

Profit = 40/3% of C.P = 40/300 * (x + 300)

C.P + 40/3% of C.P = SP

(x + 300) + 40/300 *  (x + 300) = S.P

(x + 300) ( 1 + 2/15) = 39100

(x + 300)  = 39100/ 17 * 15

(x + 300)  = 2300 * 15 =  34500

x = 34500 - 300

x = Rs 34200

Rs 34200 is paid for the old painting.
