QUESTION:

Judy has $4 more then lily.

Karen has twice the total amount of money that Judy and lily have. They have total of$66. How much more money has Karen than lily?

ANSWER:

Let Lilly has amount = $x

GIVEN: Judy has $4 more than Lilly

So,Judy has = $ x + 4

GIVEN:Karen has twice the total amount of money that Judy and lily have

So,Karen have

= 2 ( x + x + 4 )

= 2 (2x + 4 )

= 4x + 8

Total amount they have = $66

(x) + (x+4) + (4x + 8) = 66

x + x + 4x + 4 + 8 = 66

6x + 12 = 66

6x = 66-12

6x = 54

x = 54 ÷ 6

x = $ 9

So,Lilly has = x = $9

So,Karen has

= $ 4x + 8

= $ 4(9) + 8

= $ 36 + 8

= $ 44

So,Karen has $ 44 - $ 9
= $ 35 more than Lilly
