The reasons why more calcium and iron in the diets of adolescents is important because of two main factors! The first factor is that when an adolescent is developing the calcium is helping support their skeletal/bone growth and it helps because of the rapid increase in lean body mass! Iron is needed because it helps growth in muscles and helps the body's immune system! If an adolescent is not getting enough of either of these, a doctor or dietitian may want them to take vitamins, due to lack of these vitamins the adolescent may feel less energy and may feel sick! Lack of iron can also cause easy bruising and lack of strength!
