Answer:

The title ‘Deep water’ is an apt title for the extract from William.O. Douglas’s ‘Of men and mountains.’ The story revolves around Douglas’s fear of water and death due to drowning. He analyses the psychology of fear as he has experienced it first-hand. It is analysed from the child’s point of view.

His thoughts are triggered with the menacing waves at the California Beach. As a child, his mother warned him from going deep into the waters of the Yakima River. Even nine feet appears to be a menacing ninety to the little Douglas. Later he manages to overcome it and he is able to swim with ease in the Wentworth Lake.
