The Kaiga Nuclear Power Project of the Indian national power corp (NPCIL) in western Karnataka, near Karwar, is being shaped by a powerful protest movement. Since a 130-ton portion of the internal containment dome of the plant collapsed on May 13th of 2015 injuring several construction workers, the campaign has gained momentum.

Explanation:

  • The movement is spearheaded by the Kaiga Anuvidhyut Yojana Virodhi Sangharsha Samiti (KAYVSS), an umbrella organisation for many environmental action groups and citizens' fora.
  • Environmentalists in Karnataka’s Karwar are alarmed over the proposed expansion of the Kaiga Atomic Power Station by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). The power plant which has currently four units. KAYVSS has accused the NPCIL of not having approven design changes for the reactor building and of delayed and improper accident reporting, which accelerated the construction program to adhere to the original 6-year plan.
  • Kaiga is the only rainforest nuclear power plant in the world. Environmentalists maintain that growing plants will lead to further destruction of forests. But the construction of the fifth and sixth unit of the plant would cause thousands of trees to fall. In addition, activists question how realistic the construction of a nuclear plant with the prevalence of other safe, cheap electricity options such as solar and wind power plants is.
  • Environmental groups point out The Kaiga nuclear power station complex is located in the midst of tropical rainforests, at the foothills of Western Ghats, the main water source of South India, and thus no further damage to the environmentally sensitive area should be made. Moreover, Kaiga is the only nuclear power plant in the world situated in a rainforest..
  • At a time when protecting the environment has become the paramount importance from the climate change perspective, further destruction of forest of Kaiga region means the step is in a backward direction only. So, it is in the best interest of future ecological security of the subcontinent, Government of India needs to abandon this proposal.
  • They also claimed that there has been a spurt of cancer in the last two decades, because of the existing plant. Experts strongly believe that it is due to nuclear power plant radiation pollution.
  • Furthermore Addition of more units to nulcear power plant, can further complicate the public health issue, they said. Since there are a total of four dams in the upstream of Kali river, environmentalists feel that there is a possibility of dams being damaged and causing flooding similar to what happend  in Kerala, if such a tragedy occurs, and would greatly affect the people living in the entire region.”
