l^2 + m^2 + 2lm

Now distribute the negative sign for the second equation

-(l - m) becomes (-l + m)^2

Distribute

(-l + m)(-l + m)

Distribute the l and so forth

(-l * -l) = l^2

Write it as one equation

l^2 + m^2 - 2lm

Combine both equations and add like factors

l^2 + m^2 + 2lm + l^2 + m^2 - 2lm

Thus:

Remove the gcf, the gcf is always located outside:
