Landsgemeinde, also known as the "cantonal assembly", is a type of public voting by non-secret ballot system which is operated by the majority rule. The word 'Landsgemeinde' is a German term which has been in use since the 16th century. It was found in 1561, in the dictionary of Pictorius. The word stands for Land - meaning "land or canton" and Gemeinde - meaning "community or commune".
It is one of the oldest kinds of direct democracy. Such kinds of voting systems are still prevalent in Switzerland, at the sub-national political level.
The Landsgemeinde has been banned at almost all the cantonal levels, except for 2 cantons where they still hold the highest political authority.
