liquids generally have lower density as compared to solids.but you must have observed that ice floats on wated.why?

Though Ice is a solid it floats on water because of caged structure of hydrogen bond.. As a result of this structure there are gaps between two bonds.. So the density of ice decreases

When water freezes some air containing spaces form in the ice due to which it's volume increases but mass remains the same. That is why ice floats on water
