Lithium and Beryllium are the lightest elements of their respective groups i.e. groups IA and IIA respectively.Their small sizes result in a high charge densities on ions. This results in strong polarizing effects and high heats of hydration of ions. They also form covalent compounds.Due to this,Li and Be differ markedly from their heavier group elements.
