Alcohol is treated with Lucas reagent, and forms a clear solution. Alkyl chlorides are formed on reaction which being insoluble results in the turbidity in the solution.
Alcohol --(HCl)--> Alkyl chloride + H₂O
Tertiary alcohol is indicated, if turbidity appears immediately. Secondary alcohol is indicated, if turbidity appears within 5 minutes.
Primary alcohol is indicated, if turbidity appears on heating.
