suppose distance covered by car is x
total time taken in whole journey=x/12 + x/3
so x/12 + x/3= 5hr
so 5x/12=5
so distance is 12km

Mahesh traveled 12  km. and come back to its initial position.

Given:

Mahesh traveled a certain distance by car at the rate of 12 kmph and walks back at the rate of 3 kmph.

The whole journey took 5 hours.

To find:

The distance he covered on the car.

Explanation:

Distance = \frac{Speed}{Time}

Suppose Mahesh traveled x km. and come back to its initial position.

The whole journey took 5 hours.

Total time taken in whole journey= \frac{x}{12} + \frac{x}{3}

So   \frac{x}{12} + \frac{x}{3} = 5hr

so \frac{5x}{12}=5

So distance is 12 km.

Mahesh traveled 12  km. and come back to its initial position.
