Islam, basically, has five pillars.
1. Bear witness that there is no God but Allah, and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the slave and Messenger of Allah.
2. Offer salah, ie praying five times a day.
3. To fast in the month of Ramadan. The ideas behind this are numerous, some of which are to feel the hunger of the hungry, to rest the digestive system, etc.
4. To pay Zakat, or compulsory charity. Obviously, one of the major reasons is to help the underprivileged so there is affordable equality amidst men, and to remove from our hearts the blind love for property.
5. To perform Hajj, if one can afford it, once in a lifetime. One may perform many Hajjs, but only one is compulsory if affordable.
