There are 10 main sources of energy which are used to generate power. They primarily produce electricity which is sent to different locations via high powered lines.
1. Solar energy : The energy of the sun is harvested with the use of collector panels to create power. This needs plenty of sun. Only certain geographical ranges in the world get enough direct power of the sun for long enough to generate usable power.
2. Wind energy : This form of power is becoming more common. The available wind can be used as the power to turn large turbines, the turbine can then turn a generator to produce electricity.
3. Geothermal energy : This energy is produced from beneath the earth. High temperatures are produced continuously inside the earth's crust by the slow decay of radioactive particles. Hot rocks heat up the water that produces steam. The steam is captured and used to move turbines. The rotating turbines then power the generators.
4. Hydrogen energy : Water contains two thirds of hydrogen which is a tremendous source of energy. It can be used as a source of fuel to power ships, vehicles, homes, industries and rockets. It is renewable, can be produced on demand and does not leave any toxic emissions.
5. Tidal energy : It uses the rise and fall of tides to convert kinetic energy of incoming and outgoing tides into electrical energy. This is mostly prevalent in coastal areas.
6. Wave energy : It is produced from the waves in the oceans.
7. Hydroelectric energy : Most of the cities and towns rely on hydropower. The dams provide hydropower to an electrical station. The power of the water is used to turn generators to produce electricity.
8. Biomass energy : It is produced from organic material. The Chlorophyll in plants captures the sun's energy by converting carbon dioxide from the air and water from the ground into carbohydrates through photosynthesis. When the plants are burned the water and carbon dioxide is released back into the atmosphere. Biomass includes crops, plants, trees, yard clippings, wood chips and animal wastes.
9. Nuclear power : Energy is created through a specific nuclear reaction and collected and used to power generators.
10. Fossil fuels : Coal, oil and natural gas are an example of this source of energy.
