In an easier laypersons terms I would just say that Keratin, are cells that when grouping together in humans make our finger/toe nails and hair, in animals its hoofs andhorns. Essentially when solid, they are considered ‘dead’ andthat is why nails, hair, hoofs horns may be cut without pain. Keratin continues to grow, group, form, layers and layers upon each other, the process at which this starts is often referred to as keratinisation. There are also disorders involving over production, inappropriate and wildly disordered production, but that’s a whole nother question:)

nandi51: keratin is also know as protein ?
