Actually there is no phrase like the one u have asked.(As per my knowledge)
But it could mean that hiding tears.
considering the line "Nancy tried to box her tears, but it didn't work with her bestfriend";
It means that Nancy tried to hide that she was crying. She tried to pretend as if she was okay, but her bestfriend knew she was crying.
