Inspiration. It takes place when the volume of thoracic cavity is increased and the air pressure is decreased. Simultaneous contraction of the external intercostal muscles and the diaphragm expands the thorax. As the diaphragm + external intercostals contracts (moves downward) lung volume increases

During Inhalation, the chest cavity moves outward and outwards and the lungs move uwards creating space for air to enter the lungs. During Exhalation, chest cavity moves inwards and lungs move upward allowing the air to expul outwards and thus help in exhalation.
