Internal medicine doctors diagnose and deal with the problems that can be treated with medication such as diabetes, hypertension, influenza, arthritis, pneumonia and much more. On the other hand, surgeons diagnose and treat problems that need a surgical procedure for treatment such as knife wounds, inflamed appendix, colon cancer, hernias and much more. Internal medicine doctors refer their patients to the surgeons when they have a problem that needs surgery to correct it.

Likewise, if a surgeon has a patient with diabetes or other related condition then he/she may consult an internist to help manage it. Each of the specialties has different tools to work with and concentrates on the problems that they are trained to treat and cure.
