Megasporogenesis may be defined as the process of formation of mega spores or the female gametophyte. These ultimately produces the egg cells and helps in the fertilization.

The megasporogenesis takes place in the gymnosperms and the flowering plants. The megaspore mother cell is the precursor cell. The cell is diploid in nature and undergoes the process of meiosis to produce the four haploid megaspores. Out of the four megaspores, three degenerate and one megaspore is involved in the process of fertilization.
