1. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
2. Ribonucleic acid (RNA)

★Functions of DNA—

• It contains the instructions for all proteins the organism will ever synthesize.
• It is involved in the process of vertical gene transfer, through the process called “Replication”.
• DNA can also be enzymatically degraded and used as a source of nucleosides and nucleotides for the cell.

★Functions of RNA—

• The three main types of RNA are directly involved in protein synthesis (mRNA, tRNA, rRNA).
• The mRNA carries the message from the DNA, which controls all of the cellular activities in a cell.
• The rRNA ensures the proper alignment of the mRNA, tRNA, and the ribosomes.
