Male and female gametes are produced thru the meiotic divisions ..that is reduction divisions..
Number of chromosomes in the gametes is half to the actual number of chromosomes..
So when 2 gametes fuse the zygote has restored the 2n chromosomes..
Half number of chromosomes from each parent (23+23=46chromosomes in human zygote..)..
